The European Union expressed its disappointment on Saturday that the government of Kosovo did not listen to the advice of the bloc and the United States to extend the deadline for converting car plates issued by Serbia to those of Kosovo.

In an EU communiqué, it is stated that Kosovo has the right to gradually remove the old license plates "but the process must be developed in the manner agreed upon in the dialogue and implemented in a comprehensive and consultative manner".

Although the decision is a step in the right direction, the communiqué states, it is not in accordance with the Dialogue Agreements, which are binding on both parties.

The communique further states that the 2016 agreement provided for an ordered and clearly defined process with a 12-month timeframe for the conversion process "which has not been followed. Kosovo should allow a longer transition period. This has been the constant advice of Kosovo's closest partners, including the EU and the United States. It is disappointing to see that the advice was not followed," the statement said.

The European Union underlines that it is necessary to maintain calm. "We call on all parties involved to exercise restraint and avoid any actions or rhetoric that could endanger stability on the ground, especially in the north of Kosovo."

The Government of Kosovo decided on Friday to "escalate" the implementation of the decision to convert car license plates issued by Serbia to those of the Republic of Kosovo. With the decision of the government, several deadlines have been set for the conversion of car license plates issued by Serbia to those of the Republic of Kosovo. According to the government, from November 1 to November 21 the measure of reprimand begins, until January 21, it will be the measure of fine and from January 21 the trial plates will be used for another two months, after which date on April 21, they will not other license plates are allowed in Kosovo.

"This is the way to implement law and order, but on the other hand, to have our response to the increased international sensitivity regarding peace and security in our country, but not only," said the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti.

The United States expressed disappointment and concern that the Kosovo government rejected requests to extend the deadline for implementing the decision by ten months.

The decision also prompted reactions from the opposition in Kosovo, which criticized the government for harming the country's strategic interests.

The representatives of the Serbs in the north of Kosovo warned that they will oppose the government's decision in the first case when the authorities impose a fine on this matter.

In 2011, Kosovo and Serbia agreed to use license plates with the inscription RKS (Republic of Kosovo) or KS as license plates with neutral status as a temporary measure for a period of five years. In 2016, the parties agreed to continue the validity of KS license plates for another five years, namely until 2021.
