Renowned economist Nouriel Roubini conveys a bleak future for the world we live in. In an interview for the German "Spiegel" he says that the current world is engulfed by unprecedented crises that combined in their simultaneity suggest that the horizon of optimism is dissolving.
The climate, the functioning of democracy, the age of the population, the crisis in the pension systems, the conflicts between the great powers, are all in an almost destructive tune for the psychology of the society.
For Roubini, World War III has in fact begun.
"Honestly, World War III has actually started, certainly in Ukraine and in cyberspace. The Eurozone is already in review and I think it's going to be a long and ugly one. The UK is even worse. The pandemic appears to be contained, but new variants of Covid may emerge soon, and climate change is an accelerating slow-motion disaster.
For each of the 10 threats I describe in my book, I can give 10 examples that are happening as we speak today and not in the distant future. Want one from climate change? This summer there have been droughts around the world, including the US. Near Las Vegas, the drought is so bad that gangs from the 1950s surfaced on dried-up lakes. In California, farmers are selling their water rights because it's more profitable than growing anything," said Roubini.
