London said the Russian claim that British naval personnel blew up the Nord Stream gas pipeline last month was false and designed to divert attention from Russian military failures in Ukraine.

Russia's defense ministry did not provide evidence to support its claim that a key NATO ally had sabotaged critical Russian infrastructure amid the worst crisis in relations between the West and Russia since the Cold War.

The Russian ministry said "British specialists" from the navy directed Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian Black Sea Fleet ships in Crimea earlier on Saturday, which it said were largely repelled by Russian forces.

"According to available information, representatives of this unit of the British Navy participated in the planning, provision and implementation of a terrorist attack in the Baltic Sea on September 26 this year - blowing up the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines," said the ministry.

Britain denied the claim.

"To divert attention from the disastrous illegal occupation of Ukraine, the Russian Ministry of Defense is using false claims on an extraordinary scale," the British defense ministry said.

"This fabricated story is more indicative of the debates within the Russian government than the West."

Russia has previously blamed the West for explosions at the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines built by Russia on the Baltic Sea bed.

But she had not previously given specific details about who she holds responsible for the damage.

Sweden and Denmark have both concluded that four leaks in Nord Stream 1 and 2 were caused by explosions, but have not said who might be responsible. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called the damage an act of sabotage.

Sweden has ordered additional investigations into the damage caused, the prosecutor in charge of the case said in a statement on Friday.
