Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended his campaign for the primary election within the Republican Party that will select the official candidate for president. Mr. DeSantis thus withdrew from the race after failing to challenge former President Donald Trump. Former UN ambassador and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley now remains the only challenger to Mr Trump and says she wants the best woman to win.

Governor DeSantis announced his decision in a video posted on social media network X, formerly known as Twitter.

He ended his run just a week after coming second to Mr. Trump in Iowa's Republican primary.

"If there was something I could do to bring about a favorable result, more electoral activities, more interviews, I would do them. But I can't ask our supporters to give their time and donate their resources if I don't have a clear path to victory. Therefore, I am suspending my campaign today. I am proud to have fulfilled 100% of my commitments and I will not stop there. "It's clear that most Republican voters want to give Donald Trump another chance," Mr. DeSantis said.

The Florida governor entered the presidential election campaign as the main challenger to former President Trump, who made constant personal attacks on him.

But after Mr. DeSantis announced his campaign suspension, Mr. Trump spoke kindly.

“Before we get started I'd like to congratulate Ron De Santis, and of course for those who have known him, an incredible person, his wife Casey, on a wonderful campaign for president. He ran a really good campaign. I tell you it is not easy. They think it's easy to do these things, but it's not easy," said former President Trump.

Mr. DeSantis' withdrawal came two days before the New Hampshire primary. Former ambassador to the UN and former governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley now remains the only rival to Mr. Trump.

"I want to say to Ron that 'You ran a great race.' He has been a good governor and we wish him all the best. There is now a man and a lady left, and I'm closing with the expression: May the best woman win," said Mrs. Haley during an electoral event in New Hampshire.

According to former national security adviser John Bolton, predicting the outcome of the US presidential elections will be "impossible". He says there are large groups of voters who don't like either candidate.

"I think this election is going to be a lot like 2020 and 2016, with a large group of voters — and I think this year is the largest group — a large group of voters who don't like either candidate. So in the end, the winner will be the candidate who is least disliked by this large group of voters. It's not the ideal way to elect a president, but I think people are very unhappy," Mr. Bolton said.

Despite this huge voter dissatisfaction, Mr. Bolton thinks the election will be an electoral showdown similar to the 2020 election, and many leaders in both parties are already convinced that Mr. Trump will be the Party's official presidential nominee. Republican./VOA
