Italy record for the number of speed cameras. Citizens: We are being treated

Italy has the largest number of speed cameras installed along the roads compared to other European countries. The latest estimates, according to the consumer association, record 11,130,000 automatic speed detectors across the peninsula, more than the UK which has around 7,700, Germany over 4,700 and France 3,780.

Revenue from speed camera fines increased by 61.7% between 2021 and 2022.

Based on data from the Ministry of the Interior, in 2022, the 20 main Italian cities collected a total of 75,891 million euros thanks to high fines through speed cameras, an increase of +61.7% compared to the 46,921 million euros of recorded income in 2021.

The city with the highest revenue from speed cameras is Firenze, equal to 23.2 million euros, followed by Milan with almost 13 million, Genoa with 10.7 million and Rome with 6.1 million.

Then there are the anomalous cases of some roads, such as the state road 372 "Telesina", filled with speed radar stations, with speed limits that have been modified over time, creating confusion among drivers and bringing a barrage of sanctions.

The consumer association appeals that the municipalities follow road safety and guarantee the safety of drivers through the more careful use of speed radars, installed too often with the sole purpose of making money and using citizens as ATMs.
