"I am a man deeply in love with my wife, who lives helplessly with the mud thrown at her every day."
The statement, unusual in Spanish politics, was made by President Pedro Sánchez to announce that he will take a few days to reflect on whether to leave his post or not.
At the center of the controversy and her decision, Begoña Gómez, Sanchez's partner for more than 20 years.
Gómez, 49 and born in Bilbao (northern Spain), became the focus of the news after a Madrid court accepted a complaint against her for an alleged crime of influence peddling and business corruption. It was this that caused her husband to suspend his public agenda until next Monday.
At the forefront of the complaint is Clean Hands, an organization embroiled in controversy because its founder, Miguel Bernad, is a former far-right activist who has gained notoriety by filing lawsuits over alleged cases. of political corruption that have often ended up being archived.
The complaint is based on publications in several Spanish newspapers. This Thursday, Bernard issued a statement in which he said that "now it will be the judge who will have to verify whether the said journalistic information is true or not."
Always in a discreet background since her husband won the presidency in 2018, Begoña Gómez is now a central piece that could determine the future political changes in Spain.
Gómez studied Marketing, completed a master's degree in business administration and specialized in fundraising for non-governmental organizations.
It was in 1999 when she began her work as a consultant for entities and businesses such as Amnesty International, Intermón Oxfam, Deutsche Bank and Old El Paso, according to El Correo newspaper. She also pursued a master's degree at Complutense University in fundraising.
Her "initiative and desire to do things" is something that stood out from her profile in the newspaper El Correo when asked about her work environment.
Currently, according to her profile on the professional network LinkedIn, she serves as the director of the Extraordinary Chair of Competitive Social Transformation at the same center.
Before that, she directed the Africa Center at the private university IE, a center dedicated to fostering "an Afrocentric vision of modernity and the future through partnerships with African innovators." She was removed from this position in 2022.
In the complaint, accepted by the Court of Instruction number 41 of Madrid, it is said that Gómez, "taking advantage" of the relationship with the President of the Government, "would have recommended or approved by letter of recommendation with his firm businessmen applying for public tenders".
One of the companies benefiting from public aid, Globalia, owns Air Europa, which, according to the complaint, agreed to pay 15,000 euros a year, about $16,047, for first-class flights for Gómez and his advisers. .
She has yet to publicly address the issue, but her husband says in the letter announcing his resignation that these facts are "as scandalous as they appear to be non-existent" and that Gómez will defend his "honour". her in court.
Begoña Gómez's first major appearance was when, in 2015, Pedro Sánchez became the Socialist candidate to reach La Moncloa.
In his announcement speech as a candidate he appeared with Begoña, dressed in red, at his side. And on that occasion, Sanchez showed the importance of his wife in his life.
"Thank you because every night, when I come home, your joy wipes away my fatigue," he told her, in a display of affection not usually seen in Spanish politics.
Gómez and Sánchez have been together for more than 20 years, after meeting at a party and falling in love.
But beyond a shared sentimental life, Begoña Gómez is an essential pillar in Sanchez's political career.
In his book "Manual de Resistencia", published in 2019, Sánchez makes it clear that "the first is Begoña" and that it was she who insisted that he should run to lead his party, again, after he left by the secretary general of the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers Party) in 2016.
"It was what supported the family," Sánchez said.
In an interview, Sánchez described him as "constructive, positive and as a man who always sees the glass as half full".
Although not a member of the PSOE, Gómez has not hesitated to support Sanchez's efforts to promote his political career, such as when she agreed to take part in a video promoting his candidacy to lead the party.
On the Internet, she has been another activist in favor of her husband's political projects. In the electoral campaign of June last year, when Sanchez managed to stay in the government, she shared videos and messages in support of the candidacy.
On LinkedIn, where she is very active, she has also shown her attention to feminism.
One of the latest examples is provided by the scandal caused by the then president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, kissing player Jenni Hermoso at the awards ceremony for the Women's World Cup won by Spain in Sydney.
It is common to see her at official events as Pedro Sánchez's companion at state events, such as several NATO summits she has attended and hosted first ladies and presidents' wives at the NATO summit held in Madrid in June 2022, for example.
After each event it is common for the Spanish tabloid press to reflect on their outfits and show them as trends. Not for nothing, she is a regular at Madrid Fashion Week, the main fashion event held in the Spanish capital.
However, it is not the first time that he is at the center of attacks and insults. In some sectors of the right and extreme right in Spain they called her "Begoño", with the idea of conveying that she was a trans, something that also happened to Michelle Obama in her time.
In an interview with journalist Jordi Évole, Pedro Sánchez referred to all this as "the cruelty that has been said. Not because of transsexuality, but because of the way of personal attack on her".
Also, in the same interview, he said: "He suffered, but he kept it with great integrity."
Some images comparing Begoña Gómez to a man have been distributed in the special media to spread the idea that she is a transsexual woman.
"Here is the 'wife' of the president of Spain, current photo and old photo", we read in a message published on the X social network on March 13.
In the framework of the story that spreads the false idea that Begoña Gómez is a transsexual woman, some publications on the network claim that the wife of Pedro Sánchez has gone out for three days because of prostate pain.
On social networks they also shared messages saying that Begoña Gómez has been fired as a teacher from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM).
"Begoña Gómez, wife of Pedro Sánchez, has been excluded from her teaching activity at the Complutense University of Madrid by the faculty of doctors and professors (37). She does not have a university degree. It must not be published in the BOE and must the collected money is returned," says a message shared more than 5,100 times on the X social network in March 2021.
