The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said on Wednesday that the swearing-in ceremonies for the new mayors of the three municipalities inhabited by Serbian majority in the north of Kosovo are expected to be held on Thursday in public buildings in these municipalities.
"More than 6 months have passed since these four municipalities were left without mayors. Two of them even without assemblies. And the residents there, without municipal services. This is not normal", said Chief Minister Kurti during the government meeting.
The mayors of Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq, won their mandates in the election process on April 23 this year, which took place about five months after the political representatives of the Serbs resigned from Kosovo institutions amid disagreements over a government decision in Pristina for conversion of car plates issued by Serbia to those of Kosovo.
Serbian political parties, which boycotted this election process, reacted strongly last week after the swearing in of the new mayor of northern Mitrovica, Erden Atiq from the Vetvendosje movement. Lista Serba, the main political entity of Kosovo Serbs and supported by Belgrade, said in a press conference last Friday that with Mr. Atiq's oath "the occupation of the north has officially begun", while calling on the authorities in Kosovo to stop as the oppression of the Serbian people was said. "On the contrary, the decisive response of the Serbian people will come on June 1," said officials of this political party.
Prime Minister Kurti said that the refusal to participate in the elections is the result of the threatening campaign of official Belgrade.
"The absent vote was a lack of free will, not an expression of political will. Such threatening campaigns by official Belgrade against local Serbs, especially in our four municipalities in the north of the country, are frequent and continuous. But just because something happens often and constantly, it does not mean that it is normal and acceptable", he said.
The Minister of Local Government Administration, Elbert Krasniqi, said on Wednesday in a press conference that despite the pressure under which the members of the Serbian community in Kosovo are, they are interested in being part of the cabinets of the new leaders.
According to the Central Election Commission, in the elections of April 23, one thousand and 567 citizens or 3.47 percent of about 45 thousand registered voters cast their votes. The candidates of the Vetëvendosje movement won in Leposaviq and North Mitrovica, while those of the Democratic Party of Kosovo won in Zveçan and Zubin Potok.
Western diplomats have raised concerns about the possibility of an escalation of the security situation in the north of Kosovo after the start of the implementation of the results of the elections, which for the first time produced non-Serb mayors in these municipalities./VOA
