NASA unveils the suit astronauts will wear to land on the moon

December 1972. This is the date of the last time man set foot on the surface of the Moon. Since then, many things have happened in the world, including a war and a pandemic. And 2025 will be the next time man returns to set foot on the lunar surface.

At the moment, it is not known who will do it, only that a woman and a black man will travel for the first time.

The date, if there are no delays, will be two years from now. It will be when the Artemis III mission is carried out to land in an unexplored area of our satellite: the lunar South Pole. Temperatures go as low as 200 degrees below zero in these shaded areas. Extreme conditions required a new space suit for this NASA mission. In the presentation of the suit, together with the agency's officials, the spokesmen of Axiom Space, a company that has developed a design worth about 228 million dollars, also participated.

The suit presented today is an initial version, a prototype in black with some orange details, although the final version is expected to have white tones. As explained by NASA, a suit with such characteristics had not been developed for about 40 years. Therefore, it is a suitable creation for the task to be performed. NASA and Axiom Space's priority is to make the AxEMU (Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit) suit "safe". As they explain, this design has a mobility and flexibility that will allow "more exploration of the lunar surface."

Bill Nelson, director of NASA, has emphasized that this connection with Axion is “fundamental to getting astronauts to the Moon and continuing US leadership in space. They will create opportunities for more people to explore and do science on the Moon."

The suit will incorporate technological advances developed in the half century that has passed since the last lunar mission. In addition, the company will continue to test it in hostile environments and incorporate new technological improvements.

The way to enter these modern spacesuits is through a rear hatch. It includes all sorts of systems to keep astronauts safe from extreme temperatures, radiation and lunar regolith. Thanks to some powerful lights they will be able to see everything that happens around them, regardless of the back light of the terrain. And thanks to the latest materials and technology, we will no longer see the images we have of astronauts dancing on the moon, but lighter and more natural movements. Along with this, high-definition cameras so that humanity as a whole can enjoy lunar exploration.

The importance of the Moon's South Pole is such that several world powers are vying to be the first to explore it. Especially the United States and China.

Why? In this area unexplored by man, there are likely to be large amounts of frozen water in the corners where the sun never reaches. A water that will be essential to maintain future colonies and to make tests for the next big goal: sending astronauts to Mars.
