Mike Pence will run for the 2024 Presidency: He will challenge Donald Trump
Mike Pence and Donald Trump

Former US Vice President Mike Pence enters the 2024 presidential race, ready to challenge his former White House boss Donald Trump as the Republican nominee.

Pence, who has filed his candidacy papers with the Federal Election Commission, will formally announce his candidacy on Wednesday, June 7, his 64th birthday, with a video in Des Moines, Iowa, according to CNN.

According to polls, Pence is now quite far from Trump in the preferences of Republican voters. His campaign will take place mainly in Iowa, the state where the first primary vote will take place.

The former Indiana governor sees Iowa as a fertile ground for attracting conservative votes.

Pence had been Trump's vice president but refused to support him when he tried to overturn the results of the 2020 election, won by Democrat Joe Biden.

The former Indiana governor has increasingly distanced himself from Trump, saying Trump's actions that encouraged the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol building had endangered him and his family, who were in the building at the time. time.

Pence joins a large number of Republican candidates. The sheer number of candidates has worried many of Trump's opponents within the Republican Party, who fear that the anti-Trump vote could split and hand the party's nomination to the former president.
