The luxury yacht Bayesian, where 7 people lost their lives, may have sunk due to an explosion. British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his family were also on board the luxury yacht.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said that they were in the early stages of investigating a so-called "crime hypothesis", while the track being investigated is that of manslaughter.

Cartosio also confirmed that the first body found was that of the ship's cook, Recaldo Thomas, followed by four of the victims, Chris Morvillo, Neda Morvillo, Jonathan Bloomer and Judy Bloomer, found on August 21, and later Chief Technology Officer Mike Lynch and his daughter, Hannah on August 23.

Palermo's fire brigade commander said more than 120 dives were undertaken by divers, adding that it was "intense work" due to low visibility underwater.

The victims sought refuge on the port side of the boat as the yacht first sank and then rolled to the starboard side.

The inquest will examine how the surviving crew were able to get into the lifeboat while the passengers could not, and also how quickly rescue teams arrived on the scene.

"Everything happened unexpectedly, the situation worsened in a few seconds", said one of the officials, who together with the prosecutor Cartosio went to a press conference.

Cartosio also confirmed that the captain and crew were not asked to remain in Italy for the duration of the investigation.

Asked why the yacht's captain was not being detained to answer key questions raised by the investigation, Cartosio says a recent legal reform allows someone to be detained only if there is evidence of "possible responsibility".

He says they are "evaluating all elements" adding that they are seeking "maximum cooperation" from all involved.

He adds that it could be a case of manslaughter, but "we can only prove that if you give us time to investigate."

Deputy Prosecutor Cammarano says the Italian Air Force has confirmed that the most likely cause of the sinking is an explosion and not a sinkhole.

He also adds that autopsies will be done, but no date has been set yet.

Local officials were also asked about the location of the bodies on the yacht, as most of the bodies were found in a particular part of the ship - does this mean the passengers tried to save themselves?

"There is no certainty about bringing the passengers on board, but it is likely that they tried to escape, but we have no real details on that," an official told the panel.

He says there should be some evidence coming out of the wreck site.

Officials have also been asked why the passengers were unable to leave the boat at the same time as the crew members and whether anyone alerted them.

"Well, that is exactly what we are trying to ascertain from the statements of the survivors," says one of the officials.

Regarding the black box, the official said that we do not have accurate information about the black box.

"It was extremely difficult to get inside the cabins and the yacht itself," adding that the first phase of the investigation will look into this further.

He says they cannot reveal anything further at this stage, but the facts will be confirmed by later searching among the wreckage - including whether the divers found it open or closed.

"We don't want to give out wrong information now that we'll have to deny later," he adds.
