Russia's National Guard said its snipers killed four hostage-takers at a prison in the northwestern Volgogard region after they launched a deadly attack on guards and took several staff members hostage.

Russia's Prison Service (FSIN) said in a statement that four prison guards died on Friday after four inmates took eight guards and four other prisoners hostage at prison no. 19 of maximum security in the city of Surovikino, in the Volgogard region.

"They inflicted various stab wounds on four prison employees, three of whom died as a result. The other four, who resisted, were taken to the hospital, one of them died in the hospital," FSIN said, adding that four other prisoners were injured during the hostage crisis.

The media reported that several people died and that the incident occurred when a disciplinary committee was meeting at the prison.

Telegram channels linked to the prison service published a video showing the four prisoners, who call themselves "Islamic State fighters". They are seen with knives in their hands standing next to three uniformed FSIN troops and next to another injured person.

Another Telegram channel identified the four prisoners, two from Uzbekistan and two from Tajikistan. Three of them were serving prison terms for illegal drugs and causing serious injury to a person. These data have not been officially confirmed.

In another video, a prisoner states that prison guards have "violated the rights of Muslims".

Another prisoner through a video appeals to the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, to meet the demands of the prisoners and says that he needs a doctor. Putin said on television that he was informed about this incident by the head of the FSIN, writes REL.

A video shows the four prisoners standing next to a banner with an Arabic inscription. They chant "Allahu Akbar!" ("God is the greatest!"), as one of them carries a man without a uniform.

This is the second time inmates have taken hostages inside a Russian prison this summer.

In June, several prisoners took hostages at a detention center in the city of Rostov-on-Don. At the time, Russian officials said the hostage takers were members of the Islamic State.

Five hostage takers were killed and two hostages were injured during that incident.

Another incident occurred in the predominantly Muslim region of Dagestan, where at least 20 people were killed in shootings in two cities in this southern Russian region.
