The infamous boss of the mafia organization Cosa Nostra, Matteo Messina Denaro is in an irreversible coma, Italian media reports.

Denaro is admitted to the prisoner ward at the hospital in L'Aquila, as his health has deteriorated in recent days. He suffers from pancreatic cancer.

Known by the nickname "Diabolic", Denaro was arrested earlier this year in Italy. For 30 years he had been living in hiding in Palermo using a false identity.

Denaro is said to have served as an assassin for Cosa Nostra, when this mafia organization was very powerful in Italy, and to have carried out a large number of executions.

The doctors have declared that this evening they will disconnect the devices that keep him alive.
