A judge broke down in tears as she sentenced Darrell Brooks, the man who killed six people and injured 62 others last November when he drove into a Christmas parade in Wisconsin, USA. Jennifer Dorow described his situation as "unlike anything I've ever had to deal with" adding that it was "painful".
Brooks received 6 life sentences for each of the victims and a symbolic 1,067 years in prison. He is not eligible for parole.
"It is clear that the state has extraordinary evidence of the guilt of Mr. Brooks. What is more serious is his complete lack of remorse," said the judge.
The 6 people who lost their lives were Virginia Sorenson, 79, LeAnna Owen, 71, Tamara Durand, 52, Jane Kulich, 52, Wilhelm Hospel, 81, and Jackson Sparks, 8.
The judge said that the sentence was based on three factors: punishment, protection of the community and " what I wish is justice and peace for the families and the community as a whole ", she said. The courtroom erupted in applause as Dorow read the life sentence for each victim.
