Ukrainian forces have made significant progress in recent weeks, retaking the city of Kherson. But Ukraine's Defense Minister says the weather will play an important role in the fighting.
"If it rains you have to stay because you can't use tanks or other armored vehicles. If it snows, the situation is the same. If it is not snowing, but there is frost, wheeled vehicles can be used. So at this stage of the war, everything depends on weather conditions, says Oleksii Reznikov, Minister of Defense of Ukraine.
Ukraine seems determined for more victories on the ground.
"Winter will not stop us under any circumstances. I said that it is good for our troops to move more slowly, but we cannot stay in one place", says Serhiy Haidai, Governor of Luhansk
After being forced to retreat, Russian forces have now begun to defend themselves. Ukraine says that mines have exploded in some areas and some bridges have been blown up.
"The use of the roads will determine the maneuvers that will be performed. This way it will be more difficult for each party to move without being spotted because their movements will be much more predictable," says Justin Bronk, Royal United Services Institute.
Field conditions will be very difficult.
"It doesn't help morale at all to freeze in pits and trenches in sub-zero temperatures for a long period, especially for Russian troops, who often have limited supplies of food and clothing," says Justin Bronk, Royal United Services Institute.
With the onset of winter, Russia is hitting Ukraine's infrastructure, including power plants and waterworks. For civilians, life is becoming increasingly difficult.
"The situation is so bad that I am only eating bread and canned food. It's already almost winter and it's scary," says Anna Bilousova, a resident of Mykolaiv.
The West must help counter Russia's tactics, Mr. Bronk says.
"If we don't supply Ukraine to significantly strengthen its air defense capacity to counter the high-precision missiles and munitions sent by Iran, then a large number of other Ukrainians will become refugees. And many people will freeze," says Justin Bronk, Royal United Services Institute.
Winter will slow the progress of both sides. The main question that analysts ask is who will be better positioned to attack when the snow melts in the spring./VOA
