The mother of four rescued after 40 days in the Amazon jungle was alive for four days after their plane crashed. Foreign media reports that the eldest daughter stated that Magdalena Mucutuy, their mother had told them to leave and find help while she lay dying.

The news was confirmed to the media by the children's father who emphasized that it was the older daughter who told him that their mother asked them to "come out" and save themselves.

The siblings, aged 13, nine, five and one, were rescued and airlifted out of the jungle on Friday. They were transferred to a military hospital in the country's capital Bogota.

"The only thing the 13-year-old girl has clarified for me is that, in fact, her mother was alive for four days," the children's father Ranoque told reporters outside the hospital.

Among other things, the mother ordered the children to follow the father's example, as he would show the same great love that she had shown.

Rescue worker Nicolas Ordonez Gomes recalled the moment they discovered the children.

"The older girl, Lesly, with the little one in her arms, ran towards me and was looking for food," said one of the rescuers.

One of the boys lying there had said that their mother was dead.

In footage released from the moment they were found, the four children appeared emaciated from weeks spent fending for themselves in the desert.

Mrs. Mucutuy and her children were traveling in a Cessna 206 plane to Araracuara, in Amazonas province, in San José del Guaviare, on May 1, when it sounded an alarm due to engine failure. The bodies of the mother and the two pilots were recovered from the crash site by the military, but the children appeared to have wandered into the rainforest to find help.

The missing children became the focus of a major rescue operation involving dozens of soldiers and local residents.

Rescuers tracked down the children after discovering signs in the jungle, including footprints and fruit that had been bitten.
