Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has written a 216-page book describing the 20 days he spent in solitary confinement at the notorious La Santé prison in Paris.

"Diary of a Prisoner" will be published on December 10, confirms the Fayard publishing house.

Sarkozy, 70, was sentenced to five years in prison - the maximum for "criminal conspiracy" - after being found guilty of accepting illegal funds from Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi for his 2007 presidential campaign. Although he spent only 20 days in prison, he has written an average of 11 pages a day, describing the experience as "a real nightmare".

In his book, he describes the noise in prison as “incessant” and that inner life “strengthens” in isolation. Sarkozy was held alone in a small cell, separated from other prisoners because of death threats. Two police officers guarded the adjacent cell day and night.

After appealing the decision, a Paris court released him on November 10 under judicial supervision. He now lives back in his £5 million home with wife Carla Bruni and must wear an electronic bracelet. However, he is not giving up yet: if he loses his appeal in March, he could return to La Santé.
