China's Foreign Ministry on Saturday urged the United States to back off from escalating trade tensions, saying "the market has spoken" after another sharp drop in global stock prices.

The comments came after Beijing imposed retaliatory tariffs and US President Donald Trump defended his strategy in a social media post.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun posted the remarks on Facebook after Friday's broad market decline, which saw all three major U.S. indexes fall more than 5%.

"The trade and tariff war launched by the US against the world is unprovoked and unjustified," Guo wrote, sharing an image referencing the latest decline in US stocks.

Beijing's latest move - a 34% tariff on all US imports starting April 10 - was announced on Friday by China's Ministry of Finance.

The move marks an escalation in the ongoing trade conflict and fueled investor concerns over inflation, recession and broader risks to global growth.

"The market has spoken," Guo said, calling on Washington to resolve trade disputes through "equal consultation."

In response, US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to defend the tariffs and dismiss China's response.

"China has been hit much harder than the US, not even close," Trump wrote.

“We are bringing back jobs and businesses like never before… THIS IS AN ECONOMIC REVOLUTION AND WE WILL WIN.”

Trump urged Americans to "stay strong" despite market turmoil.

Investors are bracing for further volatility as markets digest the implications of sweeping tariffs and the lack of near-term diplomatic relief.
