More than 260,000 people have been displaced from their homes in Gaza as the Israeli army continues to shell the Palestinian enclave, according to the UN. This represents "the highest number of displaced people since the 50-day escalation of hostilities in 2014", the organization said on Tuesday night.

Bombings in recent days have destroyed more than 1,000 housing units. The death toll in Israel has reached 1,200 in four days of fighting, and more than 900 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza. In Gaza, rescue teams are struggling to reach survivors in several areas of the country.

Meanwhile, humanitarian groups have condemned Israel's announcement that it will cut off food, water and supplies following a complete encirclement of the enclave. Saturday's surprise attack by Hamas came after Israeli settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound
