State television IRIB had previously reported that " the Supreme Leader has achieved martyrdom ," without giving details on the circumstances.
"With the supreme leader's testimony, his vision and mission will not be lost, will not be forgotten; on the contrary, they will continue with even more energy and zeal," said a state television presenter.
The state news agency IRNA also reported that Khamenei had died, without specifying the cause of death.
Videos of the moment Khamenei's body was found were posted on social media, but they have not been officially confirmed.
After the Iranian government officially announced Khamenei's death, his official Twitter account posted a photo of him greeting with the caption of a verse in Arabic from the Quran (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:23):
"In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Among the believers are men who have kept their covenant with God faithfully; of them are some who have fulfilled their oath and some who are waiting, and they have not changed (their position) at all."
40 days of mourning and seven days of rest
According to the state-run Fars news agency, the Iranian government declared 40 days of public mourning, as well as seven days of official holidays.
At the same time, it was reported that Khamenei's daughter, grandson, daughter-in-law and son-in-law were killed in the US-Israeli attacks. Earlier, Iranian media outlets close to the Revolutionary Guard, as well as senior Iranian officials, had denied reports of the supreme leader's death, describing them as "fake news."
The news of Khamenei's death was initially confirmed by US President Donald Trump in a post on Truth Social, writing that " Khamei, one of the worst men in history, is dead ."
A few hours after the US president's announcement, a cryptic post followed on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei 's official Twitter account, accompanied by an image of a divine figure holding a missile-like sword ready to strike targets, and reading " In the name of the noble Ali, peace be upon him ."
