"Those who risk their lives at sea do not conquer, they seek hospitality, they seek life." Pope Francis delivered this message during his visit to Marseille, appealing that the Mediterranean is no longer a dead sea "mare mortuum".

The Pope underlines that everyone has the right to emigrate and not to emigrate and asks not to be closed in indifference.

"Against the terrible scourge of the exploitation of human beings, the solution is not rejection, but ensuring, according to the possibilities of each individual, a large number of legal and regular entries, sustainable thanks to the fair reception on the part of the European continent. In the framework of cooperation with the countries of origin, but saying 'enough' means turning a blind eye, the attempt now to 'save ourselves' will turn into a tragedy tomorrow", said the Pope.

Speaking about the various ports of the Mediterranean, which have been closed, Pope Francis said: And two words have sounded inciting people's fear: "invasion" and "emergency". But those who risk their lives at sea do not invade, they seek hospitality, they seek life", he underlined in his speech at the Mediterranean Meetings.

"As for the emergency, the migratory phenomenon is not so much a temporary emergency, but a fact of our time, a process that involves three continents around the Mediterranean and that must be governed with wise foresight: a European responsibility".
