Jakov Millatovic won about 60.2% of the votes in the second round of the presidential elections in Montenegro, causing Milo Djukanovic (39.8%) to fall from power after a full 30 years.

About 383,000 voters or 70.7% voted in the second round of the presidential elections.

Jakov Millatovic is the candidate of the Europe Now Movement, a party founded in June last year. The 37-year-old entered politics less than three years ago.

He has said that he wants Montenegro to join the EU, although some of the parties that have supported his candidacy are pro-Russian.

Who is Jakov Millatovic?

Jakov Millatovic is a 37-year-old young politician from Podgorica who entered politics only three years ago when he became Minister of Economy and Economic Development in the cabinet of Zdravko Krivokapic, the pro-Serb Prime Minister of Montenegro.

The young Montenegrin politician has openly called for stronger ties between Montenegro and Serbia.

"Montenegro and Serbia are connected by common history, good relations and friendship, but also the economy... the emphasis should be on improving relations between the two countries in all campaigns." - Millatovic said, among other things.

However, he also supports the membership of Montenegro in the European Union and in 2006 he voted for independence in the referendum.

Together with Milojko Spajic, he founded the party "Europe Noë!" (Europe and as REL writes, they had demonstrated a knack for "populist simplifications".

Spajic and Millatovic gained great popularity due to a reform scheme aimed at doubling the minimum wage from 222 to 450 euros, thus increasing the average wage from 530 to 670 euros.

And it was Spajic, not Millatovic, who originally planned to run against Djukanovic in the presidential election. However, his candidacy was not liked because he had lived in Serbia for a long time and because of suspicions that he had dual citizenship. Thus, the way was opened for Millatovic.
