Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu today called on his fellow Turks to organize mass protests across the country over his arrest, which is followed by a trial.
In a post on X, Imamoglu wrote that the legal process regarding his detention was a "total extrajudicial execution" that amounted to "betrayal of Turkey."
Imamoglu is reportedly now in custody, awaiting trial on corruption charges, at Marmaru Prison near the Silivri neighborhood of Istanbul.

Türkiye buğın büyük bir ihanete uyandı.
Yürütülen judgın bir adli ışımınır. Tam bir gığısız infazdır.
Milletimizi sılıştırık üçüşı ıçinde hak tübüşsine davet ıdımım. Bu hak the struggle of our nation and our children's future...
It is reported that the imprisonment of Imamoglu, the main political rival of current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is likely to trigger the country's largest anti-government protests in more than a decade.
The mayor's Republican People's Party (CHP), the main opposition party, condemned the move as politically motivated and called on supporters to hold protests.
Otherwise, Imamoglu would be named the CHP's official presidential candidate today.
The next elections will be held in 2028, but this will be Erdogan's second and legally last term unless he calls early elections before his term expires or changes the constitution.
Imamoglu, the 54-year-old leader of Turkey's largest city, is leading the presidential race ahead of Erdogan, according to some polls.
