Protest in front of the court in Istanbul

The atmosphere outside the Istanbul courthouse is tense, where hundreds of supporters of Ekrem Imamoglu have gathered and are cheering in favor of the Istanbul mayor, with police forces pushing them away.

Despite the ban on gatherings, which was extended until March 27, Imamoglu's supporters remain outside the courthouse, while proceedings involving 34 investigators and 91 defendants (including Imamoglu) are expected to last all night.

Police forces have turned the palace into a fortress after being reinforced with 5,000 of their colleagues from other provinces of the country. The police have also deployed water cannons and launched dozens of drones into the air.

In addition to banning gatherings for four days, authorities have arrested hundreds of protesters and identified over 300 social media accounts as "spreading hate."

Numerous activist accounts on X have been suspended, some only within Turkey, suggesting possible collaboration between the government and the platform.

A 2022 law gives Turkish authorities sweeping powers to censor content, making this action legal but controversial.
