The plan recently approved by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu aims for Israeli forces to take control of Gaza City, north of the enclave, for the first time during this conflict.

The city, which is home to a million inhabitants, is surrounded by land that is already under the control of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) or is subject to an evacuation order.

Israel says it controls 75 percent of Gaza, while the UN estimates that about 87 percent of the territory is either in militarized areas or under evacuation orders, writes the BBC.

Further south, according to the UN, there are areas in the central part of the Gaza Strip, along the Mediterranean coast, that are not occupied by Israel.

These areas include refugee camps, where most of Gaza's population currently lives, as their homes have been destroyed by the Israeli army.

Otherwise, the Israeli plan has already encountered opposition both within Israel and from the international community.
