Since the post-war period, the bridge over the Iber River administratively and ethnically separates North Mitrovica, with a Serbian majority, and South Mitrovica, with an Albanian majority.
Since 2011, when the first barricade was put up by the local Serbs who oppose the authority of Kosovo, it remains impassable for cars.
In April 2023, after the Albanians took over the local government in North Mitrovica, the decision to release her was approved, and this Friday it was discussed again by the Municipal Assembly.
The party that leads North Mitrovica, the Vetëvendosje Movement, says that this decision should not be reversed.
However, the leader of the Municipal Assembly of this municipality says that their work is done, now the central level makes a decision on this.
"It is the competence of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Government through dialogue with the international community, but we cannot as the Assembly and we do not have the right to discuss these issues after we have brought the decision, the concrete steps must be taken by the Government", said Nexhat Uglani , chairman of the Municipal Assembly, North Mitrovica.
For the release of the Ibri bridge, it seems that there is an agreement from other representative parties in the North Mitrovica assembly, but it is required to be done at an appropriate time.
"As a citizen, as a citizen initiative, even a Serbian colleague who was here said I am not against the opening of the bridge, but I am for the time to find a more convenient time", said Skënder Sadiku, Citizen Initiative "Mitrovica".
The Serbian List continues to oppose such an action, calling it an escalation of the situation. Meanwhile, the European Union says that the bridge will be opened for traffic once an agreement is reached in Brussels between the parties.
There are many reasons that keep the Ibri bridge closed, in 2014 the Serbs started the construction of the "Peace Park", where they blocked the passage to this bridge with concrete and planting trees.
In 2015 and 2016, agreements were reached in Brussels for her release, which did not happen, as this same year the Serbs built the separation wall over this bridge.
The wall collapsed, but the bridge continues to be closed to traffic, while the Italian carabinieri are the "guards" of the peace of the dividing bridge.
