Israel attacks Lebanon, 31 killed

Israeli airstrikes on Beirut and southern Lebanon have killed 31 people and wounded 149, the Lebanese Health Ministry said. Authorities said the death toll was preliminary.

Recent developments mark the opening of a new front in the conflict spreading across the Middle East.

Last night, Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shiite militant group, fired rockets toward the Israeli city of Haifa. In response, Israel launched a large-scale air offensive.

The attacks targeted Hezbollah strongholds in the southern suburbs of Beirut, as well as areas near the city's airport. Meanwhile, in southern Lebanon, Israel has called on residents of more than 50 villages to evacuate as attacks on those areas continue.

Hezbollah is considered weakened after being defeated by Israel in the war 18 months ago. However, due to its strong ideological, religious and financial ties with Iran, its involvement in this conflict is seen as inevitable, in a situation where almost all countries in the region are now involved.
