Part of the US base at Erbil airport, in northern Iraq, has been engulfed in flames after an attack suspected to have been carried out by Iranian ballistic missiles or drones.
According to information from the area, the target hit was an arms depot inside the military complex. Images published on social media show large flames rising into the sky, while successive explosions are also heard, believed to be from burning military material.
Eyewitnesses report rocket or drone strikes targeting the base. The base in Erbil has been the target of attacks in 2020, as well as other incidents in subsequent years. However, according to local sources, the latest attack appears to be on a larger scale and with more serious consequences.
American and Iraqi authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the extent of damage or possible casualties.
