Israel informs US: Iran plans to assassinate Trump

Israel has reportedly shared new intelligence with the United States that suggests Iran is considering a new plan to assassinate US President Donald Trump.

This is reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter. According to these sources, this assessment of Israeli intelligence is one of the reasons for the further escalation of tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Iran has repeatedly stated that it will avenge the killing of General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in January 2020 in a drone strike ordered by Donald Trump during his first term as president.

The United States is prioritizing diplomatic channels to reduce tensions with Iran and end the new phase of hostilities between the two countries, but at the same time maintains the ability to carry out new attacks if the situation requires it, US officials have told CNN.

According to sources, Washington has adopted a strategy that alternates military operations with pauses to favor diplomatic efforts, while maintaining a list of targets ready to be hit as a means of pressure on Tehran. Officials have explained that preparations are underway for possible new attacks in the coming hours, although they have emphasized that, for the time being, diplomacy remains the top priority.

Maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has fallen to about a third of its pre-war level, when it was about 100 ships a day. Currently, half of them sail along the corridor near Iranian waters, while the other half use the route near the coast of Oman.

Donald Trump has held a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, informing him about US military operations in the Persian Gulf.

Netanyahu has continued to highlight hostile statements made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, a close Trump ally and leader of a NATO member country, as well as one of Israel's most vocal critics on the international stage.

Netanyahu also reiterated the need for Israel to maintain buffer zones along its borders, his office said. This comes at a time when progress is being made in withdrawing Israeli forces from so-called "pilot zones" in Lebanon, territories that will be handed over to the Lebanese army.
