Former president in prison, former First Lady of South Korea also arrested

Former South Korean First Lady Kim Keon Hee has been arrested on a raft of charges including stock manipulation and bribery, the BBC reports.

The wife of jailed president Yoon Suk Yeol denied all charges in a Seoul court hearing on Tuesday that lasted four hours. But the court issued an arrest warrant citing the risk that she might destroy evidence.

South Korea has a history of former presidents being indicted and convicted. But this is the first time a former president and former first lady have been arrested.

Yoon was arrested in January and will stand trial for flouting a martial arts law last year that plunged the country into chaos and led to his arrest.

Prosecutors say Kim, 52, made more than 800 million won by participating in a price-fixing scheme involving shares of Deeutsch Motors, a BMW dealer in South Korea. The alleged scheme took place before her husband was elected as the country's leader, but cast a shadow over his presidency.

He is also alleged to have accepted two Chanel bags and a diamond pendant from the Unification Church in exchange for business favors. Kim is also accused of involvement in candidate nominations during the 2022 parliamentary elections and last year's general election.

In court, she solemnly appeared, saying: "I sincerely apologize for causing trouble even though I am an insignificant person," she told reporters.

While president, Yoon vetoed three opposition bills calling for a special investigation council to investigate the allegations against Kim. He vetoed them in November, a week before declaring martial law. In June of this year, the investigation council was set up with the election of his rival, Lee Jae-Myung, as president.
