Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is "emotionally devastated" by his massive national security failure and is now miscalculating. Ehud Olmert, Netanyahu's predecessor, says in an interview with Politico that the Israeli prime minister is a danger to the country.

"Netanyahu has shrunk. He's emotionally wrecked, that's for sure. I mean, something terrible happened to him. Bibi has worked all his life under the false pretense that he is Mr. Siguria. He is Mr. Gjepura," he said. "Every minute he is prime minister is a danger for Israel. I'm serious about this. I'm sure the Americans understand that he's in bad shape."

Olmert warns that Netanyahu's strategic plan to maintain control of the post-war Gaza Strip - aired in an interview with ABC News on Monday - would be a return to 2005, when Israel ruled militarily over the coastal enclave.

"It is not in Israel's interest to oversee the security of Gaza," he said. "It is in our interest to be able to defend ourselves in a different way than what we did before the October 7 attack. But to control Gaza again? No.”

Olmert warns that the patience of Israel's Western allies has worn thin thanks to the failure of Netanyahu and his ministers to outline a realistic plan for governing Gaza after Hamas. "There are many things we can do, but we cannot do everything we want," he warned.

Olmert led Israel from 2006 to 2009 as leader of the liberal Kadima party. Previously, during the years 1993-2003, he was the mayor of Jerusalem.
