Foreign Affairs: Putin is trying to provoke war in the Balkans

Recent "alarming" incidents in the Balkans are evidence of growing Russian threats in the region - and Vladimir Putin's ability to potentially provoke another front in Europe, experts say.

Writing in Foreign Affairs magazine, US intelligence officers David Shedd and Ivana Stradner say the West must prevent the Russian president from igniting the long-running conflict between Kosovo and Serbia.

In September, the United States witnessed an "unprecedented" buildup of Serbian troops on the Kosovo border amid rising tensions in the region — a move that Shedd and Stradner call an "alarming development."

In September, the United States witnessed an "unprecedented" buildup of Serbian troops on the Kosovo border amid rising tensions in the region — a move that Shedd and Stradner call an "alarming development."

This followed a clash between 30 heavily armed ethnic Serbs and a police patrol in Kosovo, which left four people dead.

There are “many indications that these incidents go beyond the known tensions that have persisted in past years. These incidents also show the growing threat that Russia, Serbia's partner, is posing to the region," the article states.

According to them, another war in Europe means that the West will have less power to help Ukraine.

Putin wants to "turn Moscow into the only credible negotiator of the Balkan conflict - giving the Kremlin leverage over the Western powers."

The article says that Serbian President Aleksander Vucic - who has deepened ties with Russia since the start of the war - also "benefits politically from the chaos in the Balkans, which helps him justify his political importance and keep everything under control." .

According to the article, Russia has fueled tensions between Serbia and Kosovo by placing billboards with declarations of solidarity with Serbia and distributing Serbian propaganda in its media.
