European Commission head Charles Mitchel has reacted to a scandalous statement by U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, who said he would encourage Russia to attack any NATO country that does not pay.
Mitchel said in a post on social media that for 75 years, the Alliance has protected the security and prosperity of both the U.S. and Canada. He adds that such statements only serve Putin.
During a campaign meeting, Trump said he would not only not protect a NATO country that doesn't pay, but he would urge Russia to do whatever it wants. However, it is worth noting that nato members are not obliged to pay anywhere, but must spend 2% of GDP on military forces.
Mitchel also adds that Europe should hasten to further develop its military autonomy.
Mitchel's reaction:
The Transatlantic Alliance has supported the security and prosperity of Americans, Canadians and Europeans for 75 years.
Reckless statements on NATO security and Article 5 solidarity serve Putin's interest only.
They don't bring more security or peace to the world.
Rather, they reiterate the need for the EU to urgently develop its strategic autonomy and invest in its defence. And to keep our Alliance strong.
