Seeking a second presidency as the Republican nominee for the White House for 2024, Donald Trump has said he would "encourage" Russia to attack any of the US' NATO allies whom he considers have not met their financial obligations.
The White House described the statement as "appalling and undeniable." Trump made the statement Saturday during a campaign rally in Connay, South Carolina, ahead of the state's Republican presidential preference primary election on February 24.
The former president has expressed doubts about aid to Ukraine as it defends itself from the invasion launched by Russia in February 2022, as well as the existence of NATO, the 31-nation alliance, which the U.S. has pledged to protect when necessary.
On Saturday, Trump claimed that as head of state that the US under his leadership would not protect any country that was "delinquent."
"One of the presidents of a great country stood up and said, 'Well, sir, if we don't pay and get attacked by Russia, will you protect us?'" Trump said, adding "I said, 'You didn't pay, are you delinquent?'"
"No, I wouldn't protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever they want. You have to pay. You have to pay your bills."
White House spokesman Andrew Bates, asked about Trump's comments, said" encouraging invasions of our closest allies by murderous regimes is appalling, and it jeopardizes American national security, global stability and our economy at home."
