Devoted her life to organized crime, the investigative journalist finds support
Livvy Haydock

British investigative journalist, known for making documentaries with some of the world's most notorious criminals, Livvy Haydock has surprised with her statement, after finding support in the criminals she interviewed, when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS).

"I've always been told I'm not afraid of anything, but this MS terrifies me. I feel so small," she admits.

The BBC reports that the 38-year-old has lived a hectic life, producing and presenting documentaries on subjects from girl gangs to child soldiers in the Congo.

Her latest documentary is Gangster: The John Palmer Story for BBC Sounds, which investigates his involvement in the 1983 Brink's-Mat gold bullion heist, the biggest armed robbery in British history.

It was her love of American rap music as a teenager that shaped her fascination with the underworld, gangs and violence.

"I wanted to understand. "A lot of times people who commit crimes can't talk about it from their perspective," she says.

This has helped him understand what motivates them to take such risks and how sometimes choices can seem "logical" to them.

It was while Livvy was investigating the war against drugs in the Philippines in 2016 that her life took a turn.
"There was something really wrong with my legs," says she, who after finishing filming and returning to the UK, the symptoms persisted. Over the next four years she made several visits to the doctor, but was never diagnosed. In 2020 it was suggested that she undergo a test of her spinal fluid to "rule out MS". But the result confirmed the opposite.

"I encounter many disabilities within the underworld. At one point, most of the gang members I interviewed were either in wheelchairs or had ongoing medical problems from gunshot wounds."
Some of the criminals Livvy talks to are also carers for their disabled friends and family.

MS occurs when the protective layer that surrounds nerve fibers – myelin – is damaged and stops messages flowing between the brain and the body. It can affect the spinal cord and affect vision, movement and balance.
