Former US President Bill Clinton has reacted through his spokesman after the publication of photos and documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, accusing the White House of using him as a "scapegoat" to avoid its own responsibilities.

"The White House did not hide these files for months only to release them late on Friday to protect Bill Clinton," the spokesman said in a statement on social media.

"This is about protecting them from what comes next, or from what they will try to hide forever. They can publish as many blurry photos as they want from over 20 years ago, but this is not about Bill Clinton. There never was, there never will be!" the statement said.

The Guardian writes that the photos released on Friday show former President Clinton in an underground swimming pool with Ghislaine Maxwell and a young woman with an edited face, on a plane with Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, and at a dinner with Mick Jagger, Epstein and other public figures.

Clinton spokesman Angel Ureña has stated that “there are two types of people: those who cut ties with Epstein before his crimes became public, and those who continued the relationship after. We are in the first group. No amount of delay from the second group will change that. The public expects answers, not scapegoats.”

The White House used the release of the photos on Friday to mock Clinton.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted a photo of him in the pool with the caption "Oh my God!"

According to official records, Epstein visited the White House at least 17 times during the early years of Clinton's presidency. After leaving office in 2001, Clinton traveled several times on Epstein's private jet to Asia and Africa as part of the Clinton Global Initiative. Clinton has never been formally charged with any wrongdoing.

However, former President Donald Trump has frequently made suggestions about a relationship between Clinton and Epstein, last month asking the Justice Department and FBI to investigate their connections. The release of the documents comes as both Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton are expected to testify before the House Oversight Committee on Jan. 13 and 14.
