A powerful earthquake struck western Turkey on Monday, October 27, causing the collapse of at least three buildings.

So far there are no reports of casualties, writes the Associated Press.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake had its epicenter in the town of Sindirgi, in Balikesir province, according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD). It struck at 10:48 p.m. local time, at a depth of 5.99 kilometers.

According to Haberturk television, the tremors were also felt in Istanbul and the surrounding provinces of Bursa, Manisa and Izmir.

Immediately after the strong earthquake, dozens of citizens took to the streets.

"So far we have not ascertained any loss of life, but we are continuing the assessment on the ground," Sindirgi district administrator Dogukan Koyuncu told the state-run Anadolu agency.

Private television NTV reported that the collapsed buildings were residential apartments, which had suffered damage from a previous earthquake.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also made a statement regarding the earthquake: "Our units are carrying out detailed investigations and checks on the ground. We are also closely monitoring the situation," he said.

In August, Sindirg was also hit by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake, killing one person and injuring dozens. Since then, the area around Balikesir has been shaken by several smaller tremors.

Turkey lies on large tectonic fault lines, and earthquakes are frequent.

In 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed over 53,000 people in Turkey and damaged or destroyed hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern provinces of the country.

In the northern parts of neighboring Syria, another 6,000 people lost their lives.
