The accused for the murder of Donjeta Pajazitaj, her cousin, Naseri, was released from prison on Thursday.

The news was confirmed for Radio Free Europe by the lawyer of the accused, Ahmet Tahiri.

"Naser Pajazitaj was released from detention today and was released from the charges that charged him with murder. The decision was taken by the Supreme Court. Our defense request has been approved. The Supreme Court has decided, and has given us the right to defend ourselves. There is no evidence that involved Nasser in this criminal act. We have said it since the beginning", said Tahiri.

Donjeta was killed in 2015. The Basic Court in Peja initially acquitted the defendant of the indictment.

After sending the case to retrial, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. But, after reviewing the appeal from the defense side, the Court of Appeals made a decision to reduce the sentence to 35 years of imprisonment.

The news about Pajazitaj's release was also confirmed for REL by Antigona Uka - Lutfiu, information officer at the Supreme Court of Kosovo.

"The criminal panel of the Supreme Court, in the session held on April 6, released NP from the indictment for murder", she said in writing.

Donjeta's brother, Shkëlqimi, expressed his dismay at the Supreme decision.

"Kosovo justice once again proved how dirty it is, once again it proved that unanimity does not exist", he said through a post on Facebook.

From 2010 to December 1, 2022, 50 women were killed in Kosovo.

Human rights organizations have, in some cases, blamed the authorities for failing to protect women at risk of violence.

In most cases, the perpetrators of the murders were husbands, then fathers and sons. /REL
