French President Emmanuel Macron considers that China, based on its close relations with Russia, "can play an important role" in the efforts for a peaceful solution in Ukraine. China's peace plan presented in February shows "willingness to commit to a solution to the conflict," Macron said at the start of a three-day state visit to Beijing. This is Macron's first trip to China since 2019.
French President Emmanuel Macron has urged his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to use his influence to help stop Russia's war in Ukraine.
"I know I can count on you to bring Russia to its senses," he told Xi at the start of talks in Beijing.
Xi said their two countries had the "ability and responsibility" to safeguard world peace.
The French leader is on a state visit to China, which has refused to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Accompanied by a large business delegation, Macron is also looking to strengthen trade ties. He is joined by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, whom he invited to participate in the talks with the Chinese leadership.
The visit comes after years of deteriorating relations between the West and China.
On Thursday afternoon, Macron was welcomed with a military parade in Beijing, before beginning closed-door talks with Xi.
The two are expected to hold a tripartite discussion with Mrs von der Leyen - who is in Beijing at the invitation of Macron - later in the evening they will attend a state dinner.
In meetings earlier on Thursday with other senior Chinese officials, including Premier Li Qiang, the country's number two, Macron and Ms von der Leyen had called for increased dialogue with Beijing.
Macron hopes for order in the French economy
The French President emphasized in Beijing that China, despite political differences, will remain an important trading partner. "We must free our industry from risks, but we must not distance ourselves and limit ourselves," said Macron, who hopes for new orders for French industry.
The president is accompanied on this trip by more than 50 entrepreneurs. The delegation includes the head of Airbus, Club Med, Ubisoft, LVMH, Michelin, EDF, but also many representatives of medium-sized enterprises, as well as the director of a French zoo, where Chinese giant pandas live.
Several contracts will be signed on Thursday. According to official data, French investments in China in 2021 were 32 billion euros. More than 2,000 French enterprises are active in the People's Republic.
Shortly before leaving for China, Macron held a telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden. In this phone call, he expressed "the will of France and the USA" to force China to "with us accelerate the end of the war in Ukraine and build a lasting peace", according to French diplomatic circles. The President also expressed the desire to "receive from the Chinese a contribution to global efforts to preserve North-South solidarity" and "with China to create a common agenda for climate and biodiversity".
