An incredible story worthy of a movie script is that of Joe Metheny, who after having a bad childhood and being addicted to drugs for years, lost all balance when he broke up with his girlfriend and started committing murders one after the other.
He even went so far as to mix the flesh of his victims with pork and sell them as hamburgers.
Joe has always been a tough guy. He was the neglected son of a father who died very young and a family that worked hard to provide for its six children. Other than that, not much is known about Joe's family.
He joined the Army in 1973 when Joe was 18 years old. His mother claimed her son had never been to Vietnam. Joe spent a very short time there, but during that time he became addicted to drugs. After leaving the military, Metheny worked at a sawmill and as a truck driver.
The event that changed everything in his life happened in 1994. Living in South Baltimore with his girlfriend and son, Joe made long trips as a truck driver. One day, he came home after finishing his journey, but neither his girlfriend nor his son were there anymore.
Like Joe, his girlfriend had a drug problem. Joe believed his girlfriend had left him to live with another man. Enraged, Joey searched for his girlfriend for days and went to every possible bridge where she and the boy could have gone.
Under the bridge, he did not find his wife, but only two homeless men who he believed knew him. When they didn't give him any information about his loved ones, Joe killed them both with the ax he carried with him. At that time there was a fisherman who witnessed all the events. Joe spotted the man and killed him as well. Joe panicked and threw all three bodies into the river.
Police arrested Metheny for killing two people under the bridge, and he spent a year and a half in county jail awaiting trial. However, he was cleared of all charges after he dumped the bodies in a nearby river and investigators were unable to find them.
Meanwhile, when he got out of the cell, Joe managed to find his family missing. His girlfriend had moved across town with her new boyfriend, while their 6-year-old son was taken into state protection for child abuse.
Despite spending a year and a half awaiting his trial, his prison sentence had done nothing to slow Joe Metheny down. Shortly after his release, Metheny killed two sex workers who did not tell him about his missing girlfriend. This time, however, he had a better idea to dispose of their bodies.
Metheny brought the bodies home instead of dumping them in the river. There he chopped them up and kept the meatiest parts in a container. He buried the ones that couldn't fit in his freezer in a truck park owned by the pallet company he worked for.
During the following weekends, he mixed the meat of the sex workers he had killed with beef and pork to make meatballs. He started selling these meatballs at a small barbeque stall he opened on the side of the road.
During this time, none of the customers were aware that they were eating a human hamburger. Whenever he needed "special meat" he would kill prostitutes or a tramp. Joe Metheny was finally caught in 1996 when a would-be victim named Rita Kemper managed to escape his clutches and run straight to the police.
During questioning, Metheny gave details about each of his murders, even mentioning the fisherman's murder a few years ago. According to his confession, he had killed 10 people. Eventually, a jury found him guilty and sentenced him to death. However, a judge overturned that sentence in 2000 and commuted it to two life sentences.
Joe never regretted what he had done. He said that if God sent him to hell for anything he did, he would gladly go. He even regretted not killing his girlfriend and her boyfriend. Joe was found dead in his cell by guards in 2017 at the age of 62.
