Interpol said Tuesday that its largest-ever firearms operation in Central and South America resulted in the seizure of thousands of illegal weapons and drugs worth $5.7 billion, following unprecedented cooperation from 15 countries.

The international police organization added that Central and South American authorities had made 14,260 arrests during "Operation Trigger IX", carried out between March 12 and April 2.

"The fact that an operation targeting illegal firearms resulted in such massive drug seizures is further proof, if needed, that these crimes are intertwined," Interpol Secretary General Juergen said in a statement. Stock.

The operation found 8,263 illegal firearms and nearly 306,000 rounds of ammunition, as well as 203 tons of drugs and 372 tons of drug precursors. Eleven people were rescued in Paraguay when authorities broke up a human trafficking ring, Interpol said.

He said law enforcement had reported an increase in drug-related violence over the past year, fueled by the trafficking of illegal firearms. Its operation also uncovered corruption, fraud, environmental crime and terrorist activities.

Authorities from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay participated in the operation.

More than half of the "crime weapons" found and traced in Central America are sourced from the United States, according to the US gun control agency ATF. This level is close to 70% for Mexico and is around 80% throughout the Caribbean.

In total, authorities have busted 20 criminal groups, including Brazilian crime syndicate Primeiro Comando da Capital, Salvadoran youth gang Mara Salvatrucha and the Balkan Cartel, which is also active in South America.

"Organized crime networks, with all their illegal activities, have only one priority, profit. We, as law enforcement officials, must show determination to destroy these groups in every region of the world", said Stock, among other things.
