Kuwait's health ministry said 63 people had suffered methanol poisoning from contaminated alcoholic beverages in the past five days as of Wednesday night, resulting in 13 deaths and 21 cases of blindness or impaired vision.
The ministry said in a statement on the social network "X" that all those affected were of Asian nationality, adding that 51 needed emergency kidney dialysis and 31 needed mechanical ventilation.
Kuwait bans the domestic import or production of alcoholic beverages, but some are produced locally illegally in secret countries that have no oversight or safety standards, exposing consumers to the risk of poisoning.
India's embassy in Kuwait, which has the largest immigrant community in the country, said about 40 Indian nationals in Kuwait have been hospitalized in recent days, without specifying the cause.
"There have been several victims, some are in critical condition while others are recovering," she added in a statement to X, noting that she is seeking further details.
