For the second time this year, Greece raises the minimum wage, in a bid to help families facing rising prices.

During a televised speech, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the basic salary will increase by 50 euros from May 1, reaching 713 euros per month.

"The common concern is that everyone is facing high prices caused by the global energy crisis, the war in Ukraine, energy prices. The decision to increase the minimum wage by 50 euros is a decision of responsibility and solidarity. "We live in difficult times, and the main concern is not to interrupt our social cohesion," said the Greek Prime Minister.

Mitsotakis's conservative government in January raised the minimum wage to 663 euros. But citizens have different views.

"The salary increase will certainly help. "Everything is growing, but salaries remain the same, so any increase is welcome", said the citizen Christos Gallas.

"If only energy costs 400 euros, then what can you pay with 700? It is not enough to cover the expenses, the prices are high ", said Yiorgos Tzalas.

Inflation in Greece rose to 8.9% in March, reaching its highest level in 27 years. Natural gas prices increased by 68.3% on an annual basis, while electricity prices by 79.3%.

Thousands took to the streets of Athens earlier this month to protest rising prices.

The government has spent about 4.0 billion euros on subsidizing energy bills for households, businesses and farmers to cope with rising electricity and gas bills.
