In a well-attended event this Monday evening, former Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and former Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos addressed a packed hall in celebration of the anniversary of the newspaper Dimokratia, marking the 15th anniversary of its publication.

With the discussion organized under the theme "The Crisis of Democracy Today", both speakers issued harsh criticisms against the current government and systemic failures, touching on issues such as alleged wiretapping scandals, institutional breakdown, and the erosion of public trust in justice and political institutions.

Karamanlis warned that "it is not enough to simply say that democracy exists" if its foundations and controls are undermined.

Meanwhile, Venizelos expressed concerns about a growing "democratic deficit", suggesting that citizens are increasingly disillusioned by what they see as a collapse of democratic norms.

Their joint appearance, coming from historically different political traditions, is being interpreted by many as a symbolic inter-party alarm signal.

The speeches came at a time of rising social tension in Greece, with other protests and institutional scandals already fueling public discontent.
