German cities are looking to build new bunkers to protect the population in times of war. But critics raise the question of what significance they have.

There is no better way to gauge a country's anger than by looking at the companies that build escape rooms, so-called panic rooms and private bunkers.

Business has not been very good lately for BSSD Defense, a privately held Berlin-based company that builds "defense room systems" for business and military applications.

In addition to home security equipment, the company offers everything from "escape rooms" that cost around 20,000 euros ($21,400) to real bunkers that cost 200,000 euros.

BSSD technical director Mario Piejde says the company has had more requests in recent years from private citizens, the fire service, and local councils, marking an increase during the COVID pandemic and a peak that was reached when Russia began the occupation full of Ukraine in 2022.

"Demands and interest are increasing because there are not many companies that offer this service," Piejde told DW. . People who have thought about it before are now starting to implement their plans."

Non-functioning bunkers

This sentiment seems to have recently spread to political circles: At a conference of state interior ministers held in Potsdam at the beginning of June, the Federal Ministry of the Interior presented the state side with a "report on the state of development of the modern concept of defense" for the German population.

The report comes three months after the German Association of Towns and Municipalities, which represents the country's 14,000 local councils, called on the federal government to invest $10 billion over the next ten years in civil defense and use the money to rebuild work 2000 bunkers of the Cold War period.

Many bunkers in Germany are no longer functional or ready for use

Qeveria federale gjermane e njeh këtë problem.

Borries is not convinced, especially considering that such conflicts can escalate into nuclear war, and today's nuclear weapons are inexplicably more destructive than those used by the US at the end of World War II.

"It's been a long time since the effects were like those of Hiroshima and Nagasaki," he says. "With modern weapons, the entire Federal Republic of Germany could be wiped out with 9 to 12 missiles."

Bunkers that can withstand such attacks, he says, must be built thousands of meters deep in the Swiss Alps. "After attacks like that, you don't want to come out of the bunker," he says.

Instead of investing billions in building a network of bunkers for protection in case of war, Borries says the government should be advised to invest in what he calls "normal" protection of the population. This is about, he says, the early warning system, especially for natural disasters such as the recent floods in Germany, and the development of better training for disaster relief organizations.

"This means more money for training, exercises and modern equipment," concludes Borries. "All of this makes more sense than imagining doomsday scenarios where you can't actually do anything to save yourself." .” /DW
