In Germany, the possibility of sending soldiers for an international peacekeeping force to Ukraine is being debated, following suggestions of a possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Such a force would be deployed in the country to ensure that new fighting does not resume.

The German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, emphasizes that Germany should focus mainly on strengthening the Ukrainian army to prevent future attacks, but he does not rule out his country's participation in a peacekeeping mission. However, other parties in the coalition, especially the Social Democrats (SPD), are cautious and warn against hasty decisions.

Public support for sending German troops is low. According to a poll conducted by Civey, 51% of citizens are against, while only 36% support such a mission. Conservative politicians from East Germany and left-wing parties, such as the Left Party and the AfD, are harsher in opposing the idea, seeing it as dangerous for the country.

Experts and political analysts estimate that at this moment the debate on sending peacekeeping troops remains largely theoretical, as there is no concrete indication that Putin is ready to end the war.
