The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group arrived in the Middle East on Thursday, joining the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, which has been stationed in the region for some time.
According to US Central Command at platform 'X', the USS Abraham Lincoln is carrying F-35 and F-18 fighter jets and is being escorted by a squadron of destroyers.
The Pentagon sent the carrier group to the region earlier this month following the killing of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and top Hezbollah operative Fuad Shukr in Beirut.
Israel claimed responsibility for the attack that killed Shukr, but neither confirmed nor denied involvement in Haniyeh's death. Tehran, however, threatened Israel with "severe punishment" as the Jewish state prepares for cross-border attacks.
"Time is on our side and the waiting period for this response may be long," Alimohammad Naini, spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said on Tuesday.
The Israel Defense Forces, in turn, threatened more military strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, prompting fears of a full-scale invasion, so the presence of US warships reflects fears of an escalation in the Middle East.
Sakaq, the US and Israel are concerned that Iran could launch a combined attack on the Jewish state, working together with various pro-Palestinian groups, including Hezbollah and Yemen's Houthi rebels.
