A man in Norway woke up to find a large container ship had crashed into his garden, narrowly missing his home.

The 135-meter-long ship "NCL Salten" crashed at 5 a.m. on Thursday after entering the Trondheim fjord in central Norway.

The ship, which was reportedly traveling at 16 knots (about 30 km/h), headed towards Johan Helberg's home in Byneset, near Trondheim, only missing his home by a few meters.

It is not yet clear what caused the accident.

Helberg was sleeping during the incident and was only notified of the unexpected visitor when a panicked neighbor rang the doorbell several times.

"The doorbell rang at a time of day when I don't like to answer it," Helberg told television channel TV2.

Jostein Jorgensen, his neighbor, said he woke up to the sound of a ship speeding toward land and immediately ran toward Helberg's house.

"I was sure he was already outside, but no, there was no sign of life. I rang the doorbell many times and nothing... And it was only when I called him on the phone that I was able to contact him," Jorgensen told TV2.

Helberg said of the ship: "It's a very heavy new neighbor, but it will leave soon."

None of the 16 crew members were injured in the incident and Norwegian police are investigating the causes.

The ship remained in Helberg's garden on Thursday morning after the first attempt to remove it was unsuccessful. A second attempt will take place on Thursday evening during high tide.
