A baby was born without legs from the knee down in December 2015 at the Maggiore Hospital in Parma, Italy, due to a malformation that no doctor had diagnosed until the moment of birth.

For this reason, the Court of Parma found the professional liability of a gynecologist from Sala Baganza, who had privately treated the child's mother, and ordered him to pay damages of approximately 350,000 euros, including legal costs.

According to the judge, the breach of duty by the private gynecologist "is undoubtedly present."

The anatomical anomaly could and should have been diagnosed during the ultrasound scans of July and September 2005. The magistrate also found a "clear" breach of duty in relation to the morphological examination.

According to Italian media, the amount will be paid by the doctor's insurance company.

The civil suit, filed by the parents of the child, who is now 10 years old and wears dentures, was also filed against the hospital and the local health authority, as the woman had also been treated by professionals from both companies, but both claims for compensation were rejected.
