Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to attack NATO troops encroaching on Ukraine, which could lead to the outbreak of a third world war.

"If such troops appear there, especially now that military operations are being conducted, we will consider them as legitimate military targets. If a long-term peace agreement is reached, I see no reason for their presence on the territory of Ukraine. Period!"

He made the threat after 26 European NATO member countries committed in Paris on Thursday to sending soldiers to Ukraine as guarantors of security and implementation of the peace agreement.

During his speech at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok this Friday, Putin also reacted to the statement of the NATO Secretary General, who said that there is no need to ask Russia about the plan to send Western soldiers, since Ukraine is a sovereign country.

"Ukraine decides on its own membership in the European Union, it has the legitimate will to decide on international relations, to protect economic interests and to create alliances, but membership in NATO is unacceptable. The issue cannot be resolved without taking into account Russia's security."

Putin also joked that he could meet Zelensky for peace talks at this stage only in Moscow, an alternative that the Ukrainian president categorically rejects, as this would be considered political subjugation by Kiev.

Earlier, the Kremlin dismissed the White House chief's hopes, saying that for now no conditions for a Putin-Zelensky meeting have been met.
