The President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro , is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center, or MDC Brooklyn , in New York.

This prison is a place with a vibrant history and many famous prisoners have passed through its gates.

The facility opened in the early 1990s and currently houses around 1,300 prisoners.

It serves as a routine landing spot for people awaiting trial in federal courts in Manhattan and Brooklyn, where suspected drug traffickers and gangsters are held.

Detainees and their lawyers have long complained about widespread violence at the center.

In 2019, prisoners were largely left without heat and electricity for more than a week, prompting them to knock on their cells in a cry for help from the public.

Two prisoners were killed by other prisoners in 2024, and prison employees have been accused of sexual assault, accepting bribes, or providing contraband goods.
